Probe calibration error.

Hi Dave,

I Use a Renishaw MP11 probe on my mill. Works like a charm!

However, during the calibration cycle ,at the end, I get an error message.

TipDiamDelta > MaxDelta (2.5400) check input parameters.

I do not understand this.

In the Tool Table I entered the probe tip diameter which is 6 mm.
How can I check the input parameters.

For the calibration I use the inner race of a ball bearing. Diameter 34.9 mm.
This I entered in the appropriate field.

Can you advide?

Hi,
When calibrating the tip diameter, the expected change of the tip diameter (from what was input to what was measured) should be due to the cosine error from the "tilting" of the tip before it triggers. That amount should not be large... so MSM does a sanity check and if it finds the correction is unexpectedly large, it usually means that some input parameter was mis-input. For example, someone tells MSM that the diameter of the circle used for calibration is not really the actual diameter of the circle.

When this happens, go the history button at the top of a page and and look at the message log. With any luck (mach sometimes loses messages) you should find several messages of the form:
"The given Circle diam = xxxxx"
"The Measured Circle diam = xxxxxx"
"Calculated Tip Wear Diam Delta = xxxxxxx"
"TipDiamDelta > MaxDelta(xxxxxx): check input params"

You are only seeing the last msg in the mach mesage area, but the prior mesages should also be in the message log.

The message you saw says that the Calulated TipDiameter Delta was 25.4mm - which is much larger than is reasonable. I'd bet that the Given calibration circle diameter DRO has a bad number in it.

Hi Dave,

OK, I restarted my mill system, homed all axis and tried to re-calibrate the 3D probe.

These are the last four lines;

Center probe results in DROs below
The given Circle diam = 3.000000
Calculated Tip wear Diam Delta = -32.198662
TipDiamDelta > MaxDelta(2.540000): check input params

My Diameter hint is 34.9000 mm

I send an email to info with a screenshot attached.

I think you are inputting the calibration circle diameter in the wrong place. It appears you put the 34.9 in the Diameter hint DRO - but that's not where the value goes.
The 34.9 needs to be entered in the "calibrate Diam" DRo in the Probing Op parameters Panel. I can't see that DRO in the screen shot you sent as it is covered by the last errors notepad window.
However, the message is saying the value is actually "3" - I think the Calibrate Diameter DRO is actually set = 3.
Change it to 34.9 and I expect things will work OK.

Yes Dave,

You are right !!
Changing 3.0 to 34.9 solved it.

I , mistakenly, thought that the probe sphere diameter had to be there.

Thank you for correcting this.

The Renishaw MP 11 probe works fantastic. It is a bit too big for my mill, though.
